Marsh grass on a grey day along the Intracoastal Waterway near Carolina Beach, North Carolina, USA. The Intracoastal Waterway was a project by the US Army Corps of Engineers, and is maintained by them as well. It is a canal slightly inland of the US Atlantic coastline and provides for inland cargo shipping via barge traffic from north to south. The waterway also provides access for local boats to the Atlantic Ocean via inlets. The waterway provides for many many economic and recreational opportunities. In recent decades increased environmental awareness has produced laws to protect the marshes which are breeding ground for small fish and shellfish.
