Church at St. Goar, near Loreley, Germany on the Rhein (Rhine) River. The Rhein is a vital waterway, navigable from the Swiss border, at Schafhausen, to the North Sea port of Rotterdam, Netherlands. The river also connects to Danube via the Main River and a man-made canal, making the shipping of goods by water possible from the Rhein to the Black Sea. In addition to the commercial and recreational uses of the river, the scenic Rhein Valley is lined with quaint towns, vineyards and historic castles, churches and other buildings. The area draws huge numbers of tourists each year.
