The World War II battleship USS North Carolina at sunset, permanently moored in the Cape Fear River at Wilmington, North Carolina, USA. World War II era American battleships were named for various US states. The battleship, which participated in many naval battles in the Pacific, had been slated for scrap metal after decommisioning following the war's end. However a statewide fundraising campaign, notably among North Carolina schoolchildren, in the early 1960's helped buy the ship and move it to North Carolina's main port, Wilmington. It was restored and is open to the public as a World War II memorial. The ship is a tourist attractions and during the summer tourist season, there have been light and sound presentations that present the ship's history in the context of the naval war in the Pacific. This photo was made in December and shows the ship decorated with Christmas lights.
